Swift Crew - Capacity Building Colorado Big Country Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) commits resources to aid in reclaiming land lost to tamarisk. Colorado Big Country RC&D donated two Stihl brush-cutters acquired through a partnership with Crystal Saw, Inc. in Carbondale to the Colorado Department of Correction’s State Wildland Inmate Fire Time (SWIFT) Crew. The machines will increase the impact that the Rifle Correctional Facility’s fire crew will have on tamarisk stands and wildland fuels mitigation projects throughout the Upper Colorado River watershed. The old saying “You don’t bring a knife to a gun fight, Cowboy” holds true as one person equipped with a heavy duty brush cutter can accomplish the work of three with chainsaws in certain age stand of tamarisk and brush. The brush cutters were presented to the SWIFT Crew supervisors as the crew worked with Garfield County Vegetation Management addressing a tamarisk infestation on Garfield County Airport property along Mamm Creek. The machines went to work as soon as a ceremonial handshake and picture taking ceremony concluded. Colorado Big Country RC&D, Garfield County Vegetation Management, Crystal Saw and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) partnered in this project to positively affect the natural resources of Colorado’s west slope. |
